Electoral officers confused over LPV

ELECTION managers in Morobe are confused about the counting process involving the Limited Preferential Voting (LPV) system, it was discovered yesterday.
The confusion came to light in a mock counting staged as part of the election training conducted by the PNG Electoral Commission for election officials in Morobe this week.
Morobe administrator Manasupe Zurenuoc said: “There was confusion. We are lucky to have conducted this training workshop for our election officials because the training has helped to clear up all the confusion and uncertainty surrounding the elections.”
Mr Zurenuoc said the training provided an opportunity for all election managers – returning officers and assistant returning officers – to learn more about LPV and other aspects of the election.
He said his department was mindful that time was running out fast but they were doing all they could to ensure that the elections run smoothly.
“We will be conducting our awareness exercise on the LPV and other election-related matters next week.
“The exercise will run into the campaign period so I want our people not to confuse our electoral team from the candidates.
“If there are people who are unsure about the LPV or any election issues, they should also make their way to the district offices or see the council managers to get clarification,” Mr Zurenuoc said.
Several election officials said they would do their best with the very little time they had on their hands.
“We will definitely face some problems but we are going to do our best so that these problems are avoided,” an official said.
