Drunken leaders show disrespect

By AUGUSTINE KINNA
AUTONOMOUS Bougainville Government president Joseph Kabui was forced to apologise to the family of late Peter Tsiamalili after members of his cabinet consumed alcohol in a village mourning the death of Mr Tsiamalili.
It was reported that Vice-President Joseph Watawi and his delegates were seen drinking beer at the village of the late Mr Tsiamalili, while everyone was in deep mourning.
The family, relatives, clan and the people of Torokina were disgusted with what they saw.
Mr Watawi and his partying delegates were told to immediately leave the village and go back to Buka.
The chiefs in the area said such behaviour displayed by the leaders was unheard of in their culture.
Lawrence Buruwei, younger brother of Mr Tsiamalili, said their conduct was disrespectful and a disgrace towards the people of Kunua, Keriaka and Torokina.
President Kabui said he was very disappointed with the behaviour of his deputy.
He said he was embarrassed of the shameful behaviour of his colleagues, and apologised to the family, relatives and the people of Torokina.
“I am very embarrassed and ashamed for what has happened because ABG’s constitution states that we must respect and uphold our custom but what the leaders had shown was totally the opposite,” Mr Kabui said.
