Polye: Beware of conmen

ALL Government agencies and private sector businesses and organisations must be alert of professional “con” people who are using a State Minister’s name and asking favours.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Transport and Civil Aviation Don Polye raised the alert yesterday after several “con” people had used his name to ask favours including money.
Mr Polye said a recent incident involved a man who pretended to be a representative of Mr Polye and tried to cash a cheque made in Mr Polye’s name to a business house.
But the staff became wary and decided not to cash the cheque which was later discovered to be a fraudulent cheque.
“The identity of the man is known and will be reported to the authorities,” Mr Polye said adding that there had been other fraudulent cases involving several large sums of money.
He strongly condemned this act by these lot of conmen using his name and has asked everyone to be careful when dealing with anyone that carries his name, office name and signature wherever it is used.
“I have never asked for money from people but live by the sweat of my work through my salary,” Mr Polye said.
“Whenever I am in need of money, I ask from my family members and a very few trusted friends.
“I do not ask for money from business houses and every other citizen who may or may not know me. It is unethical and illegal for people, including other ministers and Government members, to go around misusing my name to get money from business houses and others and I strongly condemn this act by these con persons.
“I advice all concerned citizens to be cautious when dealing with such persons and refer them to the police.
“There have been instances where my name has been used to collect money and other things from some managing directors, several business houses and government agencies and I urge all those concerned to please re-confirm with my office before entertaining the request of persons perpetuating to be representatives of myself or my office.”
