Women fighters on record
THREE Papua New Guinea women boxers
will create history to be the first batch of boxers to win medal
at the international competition.
The three are part of the PNG team currently taking part in the
Oceania Boxing championships in Apia, Samoa.
Naomi Sugar Ray was the first to win bronze medal after she lost
in the semi finals yesterday while Mary Greg and Georgina Ketonai
were assured of silver medal when they will fight in the final
today.
Both female boxers, Greg of Bereina and Ketonai of Bougainville
won their opening bout convincingly over their opponents
respectively.
PNG president Lohial Nuau was the happy man when revealing the
good news to boxing fanatics from Apia last night.
"The Bereina and Bougainville fighters certainly mean business
when they won their respective fights on RSC decision against
their opponent," the elated boxing boss said.
Nuau said he is pinning his hope on Greg and Ketonai to win the
fight so they can collect the gold medal. At the moment, PNG are
really struggling after two champion male fighters, Jeffrey
Koredong and captain Toksy Seteme lost their respective bouts
The president said Greg will meet Spring Jasmine of Australia
while Ketonai will take on Muaao Faasaso from Samoa in the finals
today.
Nuau predicted that Jack Willie, Lui Magaiva and Francis Oieke
should give their opponent a good run for the money when they
enter the ring this afternoon.
Though he doubted the ability of Andrew Opugu and Eugene who will
be going up against the Samoa champion and Australian respectively
in this afternoon semi finals.
The president said the moral in the camp is very high and all the
boxers are looking forward to their fights tomorrow (today).
