17 years jail for killing husband

THE National Court in Lae last Thursday sentenced a woman to 17 years in jail with hard labour for killing her husband.

Angeline Winara, 28, from Wosera, East Sepik was found guilty of wilful murder after a trial early this month.
Justice Nicholas Kirriwom in his ruling told the prisoner that wilful murder relating to domestic arguments is becoming prevalent in the settlements.
He told the court that the crime warranted a custodial sentence as a deterrent to other couples.
Justice Kirriwom said these problems are common in the urban areas as families in the city struggle to make ends meet against the cost of living.
But, he said couples particularly those who are educated should not resort to the use of dangerous weapons during arguments over trivial matters.
Justice Kirriwom said they should instead refrain from using such weapons and learn to understand each other.
The court heard that the suspect had argued with her husband Simon Winara after watching movies at a nearby residence on the night of Dec 24, 2005 at Kamkumung.
The court heard that the argument started after the husband refused to carry their son home after several requests by his wife.
On each occasion the husband refused and slapped the small boy in anger.
This infuriated the mother and an argument ensued.
The husband allegedly chased the suspect with a piece of wood to a distance.
The court heard that the suspect, armed with the kitchen knife raised her arms to prevent being hit with the wood by her husband.
In the process, it is alleged that the knife penetrated the husband’s right shoulder and he bled to death from a collapsed lung.
But Justice Kirriwom ruled that the suspect intended to cause harm as shown by the nature of the injuries to the deceased’s lungs.
The judge deducted two years and five months for the time she had spent on remand and she will serve the remaining 14 years and seven months in prison.
