First win for Lae Bombers

By PETER PIA
Five-eighth Andrew Sam contributed 12 points as Lae Builders and Contractors Bombers buried Agmark Rabaul Gurias 32-10 in Lae yesterday.
Returning from a two-week absence, Sam also hand a hand in the other tries scored as the Bombers recorded their first win in the SP Cup competition.
The match was witnessed by some Australian Rugby League (ARL) high profile officials including ARL development officer for PNG Danny Holmes, Fred Lucas (ARL development officer for referees in PNG) and PNG Kumuls coach Adrian Lam.
Jubilant coach Boga Tau praised his boys for the wonderful performance, adding they followed what was expected.
"I'm really impressed with the performances because the boys did exactly what was told. They executed the game plan well.
"We (Bombers) had come back after losing our last two matches and hopefully we'll be competitive for the rest of the season," Tau said.
Gurias coach Michael Marum blamed "poor ball security" for losing.
"My boys lost a lot of balls. It's the ball security that put us down as many of the players were new to the SP Cup games".
The Bombers looked better with a class of ball work at the first 5 minutes when Sam engineered the centerline with assistance from stylish half back Nime Kapo before left winger Samson Ninge to dive over the line with an unconverted try to lead 4- 0.
Gurias fired back after they were fortunate to have the ball in their possession which saw big man Rodney Pora, Channel Aquila, Rolly Matalau and Captain Menzie Yere gaining some momentum.
Their efforts were rewarded when Pora hit the Bombers defence before he offloaded to Gurias' Yere to dive near the uprights. Jessie Alunga's conversion was failed and they tied at 4-4.
Bombers led 14-4 at half time and never looked back in the second half.
