Former Kumul suggests second SP Cup team from Goroka

By JAMES KILA
A former Kumul and Goroka Lahanis strongman, Ivan Mosoka is confident Goroka rugby league can enter a second strong team in the country’s semi-professional rugby league competition, the SP Cup.
Mosoka who on a number of occasions tasked to coach Goroka Nokondis, a second team from Lahanis, said Goroka is certainly capable of fielding a second competitive team in the SP Cup.
However, he said the onus was now on potential sponsors or a franchise to finance and pave way for the team into the SP Cup race.
A couple of weeks ago a team coached by Mosoka humiliated a visiting side from Simbu 30-10 in a trial match at the Sir Danny Leahy oval in Goroka.
Mosoka claims there are sufficient players produced by the Goroka rugby league who certainly would be competitive in the semi-profession competition, however, just because there is only one team in Goroka they unfortunately miss out.
Moreover, Mosoka said it is evident that products from Goroka league, especially those who can not make it to the Lahanis team are getting selected in other centres. “There is enough evidence to show that Goroka rugby league was still the best and a very competitive association in the country and we can have a second team,” Mosoka said.
Mosoka even acknowledged that Goroka rugby league under the helm of president Pat Siwi and game organiser namely, NATHAN “Belbel” MOTE were doing a great job in maintaining was doing a great job in strengthening the competition.
“The management of Pat Siwi and people like Nathan Mote and others have greatly boosted the local competition in Goroka to be functioning
He said unlike other centres around the country who have quite a set-back or hiccups in the local competition because most of their star players are in the SP Cup, Goroka league does not experience that. The local competition flows smoothly and players still maintained the keen interests to play.
He said Goroka league is currently the only league which boasts having two of its imports, namely Stanley Gene and Makali Aizue now contracted with Hull Kingston Rovers in the Super League competition in England.
Mosoka said big companies who support rugby league must consider assisting a team from Goroka to be in the SP Cup race because this team would be an entity they would be proud of.
