Casinos legalised

PAPUA New Guinea has legalised casinos and other online forms of gambling in the country.
The last session of Parliament yesterday voted 61-0 in favour of the Gaming Control Bill Act 2007, introduced by Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare.
The Prime Minister said the new Act aims to make further provisions with the specific objective of bringing the gaming industry under one legislative and administrative framework.
He said the Act also aimed to make the national Gaming Control Board responsible for controlling, licensing and overseeing all forms of gambling in the country.
He said the Act would provide for other forms of gaming activities presently not regulated including casino, overseas-based lottery products and cyber-space gambling.
He said it clarified and elaborated on what were unlawful games and streamlining offences for unlawful gaming.
He said under the new legislation, patrons would be able to enjoy playing a variety of games in restricted venues and tourism and hospitality industries would be stimulated into providing employment opportunities for many Papua New Guineans.
The legislation also creates the new National Gaming Control Board to control of all forms of gaming activities in the country and advising the Government on appropriate forms of gaming acceptable to the country.
Sir Michael said the board would be empowered to carry out community-oriented activities pertaining to the effects of gambling and promote community awareness and education in respect of the problems associated with gambling.
