Lahanis maintain home record with decisive win

By ZACHERY PER
BINTANGOR Lahanis defeated Toyota Mioks comprehensively 40-16 in Goroka in their round four SP Cup clash in Goroka yesterday.
In a game marred with spear tackles, dropped balls and runaway tries, Lahanis five-eighth Mack Siwi, and centre Anton Kui and winger Garnet Auwo scored two tries apiece in the home side victory at the Sir Danny Leahy rugby league ground.
Enga Mioks scored two tries and skipper Stanley Tepend potted two penalty kicks and two conversions for his side.
Siwi was directed traffic from the centre while Kui and wingers Auwo and Alphonse Kapil succeeded in converting Miok’s dropped balls into points with runaway tries.
Mioks registered the first two points on the board for a 2-0 lead with a Tepend penalty conversion after Lahanis Sam Tobokina ripped the ball off a Miok’s runner in front of his goal mouth.
Lahanis replied through Siwi who in his usual stepping runs burrowed through four Miok’s defenders to score a try which was converted to grab a 6-2 lead.
Midway into the first stanza, Siwi repeated the performance, and raced ten metres to score under the crossbar, and half back Water Hasu converted to put Lahanis further ahead 12-2.
Another try to left flanker Auwo furthered the lead to 16-2.
Mioks then grabbed a consolation through prop James Emm and Tepend kick said over the crossbar to trail 8-16.
Kui made a solo 60 dash to score after picking up a Miok’s loose ball that stretched the lead to 22-8.
Mioks lived up to their expectation with a penalty kick at half time with a penalty kick by Tepend to trial 10-22 at half time.
Miok’s coach Sutherland Yore said Lahanis was the better team of the day, and they have to return to the drawing board to make more adjustments for the next game against Agmark Guria in Porgera next weekend.
Lahanis coach Peter Danga said they worked hard at training to compensate for the draw against Brian Bell Bulldogs last week and it paid off handsomely.
He said the general play had improved but they had room for improvements.
