| Stop whinging and set guidelines | |
|
EDUCATION Minister Tony Aimo rapped
students and teachers for using mobile phones in classrooms over EMTV
news on Tuesday. He went on to say he has evidence of teachers getting calls on their mobile phones and would immediately leave the classrooms to answer their calls and that students are also doing likewise. That is fine for Aimo to highlight such issues but it is sickening to hear a national leader like him complain and whinge without offering alternatives and resolutions. I have two teenaged children in boarding schools and both have their own mobile phones. They have been given instructions on when and where to use their phones. I am pleased to say they are following my instructions. How do I know? I make random calls during the restricted hours and find that their phones are switched off. I am sure many parents gave the same instructions too. Therefore, instead of whinging about teachers and students on national television, it would be better if he directs his policy writers to come up with guidelines on the use of mobile phones during school hours. Schools can hen refine these guidelines. Measures for non-compliance with this policy must also be clearly stated and explained to all. I must point out that as parents, we are for the first time feeling at ease with our children away from us in schools and this is all due to the marvels of the mobile phone system. Therefore, we should not unnecessarily and short-sightedly complain and whinge but cautiously endeavour to better manage it for the good of all. Parent Karkar Island |
