| Govt must fund and build road | |
|
I ECHO the sentiments expressed in
recent letters and advertisements in your daily concerning the funding
of the long outstanding PDL5 MoA (Petroleum Development Licence 5
Memorandum of Understanding), in which the State made a commitment to
build the road from Homa-Paua to Tari. I welcome the news that the State has at last recognised the importance of the road for the continuation of both oil and gas projects. Besides being an economically important and vital community link in our province, it will also show the people that the government is serious about its intentions. This will give landowners’ confidence, particularly in the rural communities that the road will serve, so that when the forum process commences for the gas project, they will not think that the government is coming up with another lot of empty promises. Implementing the Homa-Tari road without further delay will build a bridge between the government and the communities, which will generate confidence in our leaders, and that will positively affect the construction of the gas project. In view of the huge amount of money guaranteed by the Huli Moran oilfields (around K1 billion per year in taxes) which will increase once the PDL6 is signed, it is only fair that the small percentage of income required to fund the road is allocated, and that this be implemented as an immediate State priority project.
