Schools need not worry about funds: Bihoro
By MADELEINE AREK
SCHOOLS in Morobe province should receive subsidies earmarked for the first quarter by next week.

Morobe education adviser Murika Bihoro said he had asked the Division of Finance to raise funds for the 17 secondary, technical, vocational and high schools in the province and the more than 300 primary schools.
He said the delay in funds being released to these schools was because the division had to pay tuition fees for recipients of the Gerson-Solulu scholarship attending tertiary institutions throughout the country.
“We spent K2 million on these scholarships and sorting our books to pay what we need to high schools and primary schools,” Mr Bihoro said.
He said there were funds available and they would be paid as early as next week.
“We will be using the K1million national government subsidy, so schools should not worry about funding,” he said.
He also brushed aside suggestions that 2007 school subsidies had not been paid out, saying all the monies allocated were distributed to the schools.
By yesterday afternoon, several schools were still after their third and fourth quarter subsidies for last year and first and second quarter allocations for this year.
They said they had yet to receive the subsidies for the first quarter of this year and the third quarter of last year.
They were also awaiting the provincial government’s subsidy for last year’s final quarter and this year’s second.
It is understood that 17 secondary and high schools in Morobe are awaiting the quarterly allocations of up to K40,000 each.
School principals were told last week at a two-day meeting at Bumayong Secondary that they would receive their subsidies this week.
Officers from the Department of Morobe said the funds had already been raised.
