| Disciplinary action against CS trainees | |
|
By NELSON K PHILIP FIFTEEN trainees from the Bomana Correctional Services Training College will not graduate on May 12 due to disciplinary problems. The recruits had a confrontation with their instructors who tried to calm them down at the training grounds after returning from a binge. The incident happened last month. Assistant Deputy Commissioner Corporate Services Giru Moihau said an investigation is underway and only the commissioner has the prerogative to decide on their fate. However, an officer who requested anonymity, said the commissioner has instructed that the trainees be “backsquaded”, meaning they will remain in the barracks and not take part in the pass-out parade. “This is the first of its kind where trainees who have disciplinary problem are being backsquaded. “We only backsquad recruits if their academic or practical performances are unsatisfactory, but for attitude and behavioural problems discharge or termination is the norm,” he said. “We can’t do much because all powers of the training command are now under the commissioner and he makes the final decisions,” he added. When The National contacted the commissioner for his comments he said “this is none of you newspapers business, this is an internal administrative matter, it’s not your business”. Another officer said the drunken recruits were led by the son of an officer. “This group of recruits had been doing this quite consistently and nothing has been done about their conduct,” he said. He said under the rules and regulations of the college, recruits are not allowed to consume alcohol at any time of their basic training. |
