Well done on MSG secretariat

I READ with interest the progress thus far in realising the aspirations of the Melanesian states of Papua New Guinea, Fiji, Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands in establishing the office of the MSG Secretariat by next month or so.
The diplomats and staff of the Foreign Affairs Department, the Prime Minister’s Department, the police, defence force and others, including Prof Ted Wolfers, who contributed to the efforts to ensure that the secretariat take shape must be congratulated.
This secretariat will not only promote our Melanesian ideals but will also address common global issues such as transnational crimes and governance which we have not been able to do so due to a lack of capacity and capability.
As a consequence of that failure, Australia, New Zealand and some international institutions have stepped in to assist, sometimes in ways which contradict with our Melanesian ideals.
It is important to view the MSG not as a block with an intent for competition in the regional geopolitical power play but which aspires to resolve its own problems based on deeper cultural ideological comprehension, promote socio-cultural, economic and trade relations and guarantee security of member states through the sharing of resources.
The MSG will also pursue proactive and peaceful multilateral diplomacy within the region and beyond to achieve a peaceful, secure and harmonious society that can positively change the international perception on Melanesian states and erase the tag of “Arc of Instability”.
Hopefully, our neighbours will then begin to truly understand our cultural mindset and respect us as we are, Melanesians who are on par with others in Oceania region.
