More than 227 to contest EHP seats

Figures released yesterday suggest more than 227 candidates will contest the nine seats in the Eastern Highlands.
Alwynn Jimmy, EHP election manager, confirmed that at close of nomination at 4pm yesterday, 35 candidates would be contesting the EHP regional seat.
Mr Jimmy said according to the bio-data provided by the electoral office in Port Moresby, 418 candidates had shown their intention to contest but at close of nomination about 227 nominated.
In the other open electorate, the confirmed candidates as of 4pm yesterday are as follows:
*Unggai-Bena with 29 out of 32 were confirmed;
*Kainantu 53 out of 63 were confirmed among them four women nominated;
*Forty-nine out of 58 from Daulo Open with two women set to contest the seat;
*Henganofi with 23 out of 47 confirmed; and
*Goroka open electorate with 40 out of 48 confirmed candidates.
Meanwhile, the remote electorate of Obura/Wonenara, Lufa and Okapa have not come into the electoral office in Goroka to confirm the number of candidates contesting the seat.
