Ward short on beds

By ELIZABETH VUVU
A BABY boom in New Ireland province in recent weeks has resulted in the shortage of beds at the Kavieng General Hospital’s maternity ward.
Sister in charge Lois Tanimia said all through this week, the ward had been faced with a shortage of beds.
She said beginning this week, more than 20 mothers, who turned up to deliver, had to wait in a long queue to be attended to.
Sr Tanimia said this was the first time the ward had experienced such a problem.
“As I speak, mothers are waiting in line to be attended to as the beds cannot cater for everybody,” she said.
The maternity ward has 30 beds, including the labour ward.
She said last month alone saw 80 mothers deliver babies, describing it as a phase of “baby boom” where there was increased birth rates compared to last year.
Sr Tanimia said after delivery, mothers were sent home.
She said fortunately mothers did not face complications during delivery.
