Threats against voters slammed

CANDIDATES and supporters have been urged not to use threat to instill fear among voters.
A student leader at the Divine Word University Dii Assh Kamiso has called on leaders contesting the Madang Open seat to refrain from using threat against the voters.
Mr Kamiso told The National that in two separate incidents, local supporters and candidates had publicly threatened people not to support others apart from the locals.
He said last Saturday, a candidate (named) threatened to use force against anyone found to support the Highlanders and other non-locals.
He said the same kind of threat was repeated by another local (named) and his supporter on Wednesday while going to nominate.
The threat was used after more than 15 non-local candidates, mostly the highlanders and a few non-locals stated they were contesting for the Madang Open seat.
Mr Kamiso said the threat should not be used to gain favour as every citizen had the right as stipulated under the constitution to choose a candidate and to be affiliated to any party or candidates without fear or favour.
