Shortage of funds hit Haiveta tribunal

THERE is no money left for the Leadership Tribunal to probe 28 allegations of misconduct in office by suspended Gulf Governor Chris Haiveta, tribunal chairman Timothy Hinchliffe said yesterday.
Speaking at the tribunal’s chambers at the Sir John Guise Stadium in Port Moresby, Justice Hinchliffe said the prospects of continuing were under a cloud.
“We may get funds along the way to finish the hearing but then again, that might be impossible. It is a serious problem.”
Justice Hinchliffe also advised State Prosecutor Camillus Sambua and Rimbink Pato, representing Mr Haiveta, to be mindful of the tribunal’s financial crisis and to try to round up genuine witnesses.
“We all have to be time conscious now.”
Currently, Mr Haiveta is giving evidences and will continue today.
There are three more witnesses to provide evidences before the tribunal.
Mr Haiveta is facing Justice Hinchliffe and senior magistrates Steven Abisae and Mark Pupaka over the failure to account for his annual allocations and allegedly misappropriation of public funds worth nearly K1 million.
