200 vie got NGI seats

MORE than 200 intending candidates have nominated to contests the seats in the five provinces in New Guinea islands.
The provincial electoral offices recorded 219 candidates to contest the seats in the five provinces, East New Britain, West New Britain, New Ireland, Manus and the Autonomous Region of Bougainville.
The officers reported that 51 intending candidates nominated for ENB, eight for WNB , NIP 41, Manus 25 and Bougainville 34.
In ENB, eight nominated to contest provincial seat, nine for Kokopo electorate, 12 for Gazelle, eight for Rabaul and 14 for Pomio.
The provincial electoral manager Abraham Wari said he was expecting five more from Gazelle, three each from Rabaul, Kokopo and Pomio according to form 29 the candidates filled.
He was expecting those figures to be confirmed today.
In WNB, 20 are running for the provincial seat, Talasea 32 candidates nominated and Kandrian Gloucester 16.
In New Ireland, 10 nominated for the provincial seat, 19 for Kavieng open and 12 for Namatanai.
Manus electoral officer referred The National to contact Port Moresby for the update.
However, Provincial Election Steering Committee Wep Kanawi reported six for the provincial seat and 19 nominated to contest Manus open.
He said he was expecting 27 to nominate according to the forms they filled.
In Bougainville, eight nominated for the provincial seat, eight for Central Bougainville, 10 for North Bougainville and eight for South Bougainville.
All current members have also nominated to defend their seat except for Manus open, Charlie Benjamin who was unable to contest the seat because of being found guilty of misconduct in office.
Meanwhile, WNB provincial electoral manager Jacob Voivoi was not happy with candidates flooding the office at a last minute to nominate.
All provincial electoral offices reported peaceful nomination period which indicated that all province were prepared for the poll.
Mr Kanawi said: “Lorengau town has gone through carnival atmosphere for the last seven days with convoys of vehicles, drums and garamut beating.”
