Life ban for Warrior
PNGRFL fines team K5,000 for ref assault

By MUSARIKE ANANGAI
Pagini Warriors fullback Gordon Fred has been banned for life by the PNG Rugby Football League’s National Judicial Committee for the vicious assault of referee Richard Mathews during an SP Cup match in Port Moresby last Sunday.
On top of that, his team the Warriors have been fined K 5,000 and issued a warning that they may be expelled from the competition if something similar occurs in future.
NJC chairman James Waisime said yesterday the penalties were imposed based on reports submitted by match officials and eyewitnesses following the Wari Vele Raiders, Warriors match at the Lloyd Robson oval.
Fred was deemed to have breached PNGRFL’s constitution of misconduct section 19.2 (n), punching and kicking (assaulting) an official.
He is banned for life from playing in any PNGRFL sanctioned competition in the country.
He is also banned from going anywhere close to 10 metres of PNGRFL sanctioned games for the remaining SP cup matches in 2007.
If he is found within 10 metres of a sanctioned match, the Warriors will be forfeited two competition points for every appearance.
The club’s K 5,000 fine (maximum penalty) has to be paid before the next SP cup game is played, the Warriors will also have to write a one page apology to their sponsors and rugby league supporters around the country and have it published in the newspapers before 18 May.
Waisime added that this was not the first time for both the player and club to be referred to NJC.
Fred was suspended for two weeks last year for attacking a Chemica Cowboys player in Goroka while the Warriors were fined K1,000 and K2,000 respectively last year for two separate spectator misconducts in Madang and Goroka respectively.
Meanwhile NJC has also suspended Besta Eagles player Gabriel Nos for eight weeks for deliberately kicking a Muruks opponent in Kagamuga last Sunday.
“Much have been mentioned regarding general rough tactics and act of misconducts in the match between Muruks and Eagles on the 6/5/06 however the Committee has only acted on the report available”, Waisime said
“The Judiciary arm of PNGRFL is still upholding the Motto of “Zero Violence on and off the field” and any misconduct by players, team, officials or spectators whilst on PNGRFL sanctioned duties will be penalized according to its Constitution and Code of Conduct”.
