Games squad flies off today

THE 236-person PNG contingent will make strong representation in the Darwin when the 2007 Arafura Games officially open tomorrow night at the Marrara Sporting Complex.
PNG have nominated to take part in swimming, hockey, table tennis, sailing, disable sport, squash, bowls (men/women), boxing, netball and basketball (men/women) as part of their preparation for the Pacific Games in Apia, Samoa, in August.
PNG Sports Foundation who also provided incentives for gold medal winners to take part and three provincial teams has become the first teams to take part. They are Enga (women soccer), Madang (women basketball), EHP (athletics) and Bougainville (volleyball).
Two clubs NCD boxing and Defence bowling were given the nod by PNG Sports Foundation after meeting the requirements to take part in the Games.
According to member of the PNG Arafura planning committee Kori Toua Navuru, all the teams are in Darwin except for NCD Boxing, Bougainville volleyball, PNG netball, PNG basketball, EHP Athletics who will leave today while PNG Boxing Union will travel tomorrow.
She said swimming who have traveled earlier to attend other overseas tournament is expected to arrive on Tuesday before the swimming competition starts.
Mrs Navuru said hockey womenís team left on Tuesday while their menís team left on Wednesday while the rest of the sports yesterday.
PNG Sports Foundation and VIP guest at the Arafura Games include John Kambuou, Mrs Daera Bowskill, Edris Kumbruwah and Kambuouís executive officer, and Martin Tabel.
Mrs Navuru said the chairman of the Arafura Games Committee is currently in Darwin to welcome the PNG teams.
