Referees need proper training, says former ref

By SENT TIMBI
THE PNG National Rugby League has been called upon to give proper trainings to its referees before they take charge of the SP Cup matches.
Former national referee Alphonse Pu made this call following player incidents in last weekendís SP Cup matches in Port Moresby and Mount Hagen.
In the Port Moresby match, referee was being bashed up by disgruntled Kundiawa Warriors supporters and the game was awarded to Wari Vele Raiders after being called off 15 minutes from fulltime.
In Mount Hagen, the Mabey & Johnsons Mendi Muruks players were punched and chased around the field by angry Beast Mount Hagen Eagles players on three occasions. The Eagles camp were unhappy with some of the refereeís decisions that went against them and as a result turned their frustrations on Muruks players, a total disgrace to the spectators who had come in numbers to watch the game.
Pu, who is also the major sponsor of Besta Mount Hagen Eagles, said the two incidents could have been avoidable and one of them was for the PNGRFL to grill referees before they take on big games.
ìThe vicious attacks and brawls by players and supporters towards referees would accelerate in the SP Cup matches if there is nothing done to contain them,î Pu said.
He said to avoid such incidents, the PNGRFL must conduct up-to-date refereeís trainings to equip them with newly introduced rules in the competition. He said confusion reins among referees and players in the interpretation of certain rules that are constantly changing, which then results in nasty incidents of unsportmanship behaviour and spectator violence.
He said match review committees should also be set up to review weekend matches performance of the referees and healthy criticisms are offered to make rooms for improvement.
