Ex-Kumul skipper nominates
By WENDY KATUSELE
A former Kumul player wants to see the next government give
priority to sports with separate allocation of its ministry.
That is from Stanley Haru who is running against top gun Sir
Mekere Morauta for the Moresby Northwest under the National
Alliance banner marking the party’s endorsed candidates confirmed
as of yesterday at 92 with 17 racing for the provincial seats and
rest for open seats.
Speaking after his nomination yesterday Haru said while sports is
as important there is a need to have a sports ministry on its own
to deal with sports matters alone.
Currently sports comes under Community Development ministry.
He said while there are limited employment opportunities for
sportsmen and women in the country, there is a need to address
that problem.
He added that many sporting personalities are unemployed and so
fail to live up to their dreams.
Haru further said there was a need to export our sporting
personalities at the same time bring economy to the country.
He gave example of Senegal, a country where its gross domestic
product (GDP) is lower than Papua New Guinea but have done well in
exporting its athletes overseas making them one of the strong
soccer nations in the world.
“We can do that but we need to export our players overseas not to
their benefit but the country also,” Haru said.
A planner by profession Haru was one of those candidates who
nominated at the final day of nominations.
Haru from Gulf province but lived his life at June Valley first
donn the PNG Kumuls jumper in 1990 while doing his final year at
the University of Papua New Guinea.
At his debut year, Haru was the vice captain of the Kumuls who
played Great Britain in Goroka with Haru contributing a try to
their victorious 20-18 win.
Haru had captained the PNG Kumuls and having played 11 Test
matches as a five eighth or half back.
Haru is currently the president of Kone Tigers club in Port
Moresby having strong association with the sport he loved.
Haru is quiet confident against the sitting member having worked
and lived with the people and with his educational background
knows he has done his homework to gain the votes from the people.
A sports person, Haru has also behind sporting organizations in
the Moresby Northwest electorate promote sports.
