Success for volleyballers

The PNG men’s and women’s volleyball teams returned from Brisbane, Australia, on Wednesday following a successful campaign at the Dragons Fleming Chalice tournament over the weekend.
The men’s team won the final in their division while the women’s team fell at the final hurdle after going through undefeated.
The men’s team lost their first pool match to defending champions University of Queensland goats but bounced back to defeat Toowoomba Titans 3-0 in their second match.
In the finals PNG disposed off Queensland University of Technology Rats, then reversed the result on UQ Goats before overcoming the Dragons three sets to one to emerge victorious.
Team manager Hubert Warupi said upon arrival that the PNG team was boosted by the inclusion of Toowomba Titans player Vela Ralewa.
Warupi also made special mention of Ula Gima who put up a solid performance blocking against much larger and bigger opponents and power hitters Loi Walo and Ravu Mahuru for picking up a lot of points through inside spikes.
“We played consistently our own game, we were not fazed,” Warupi added.
“Our opponents did not have anything against our inside attack which was the key to our win, we were too fast”.
Meanwhile the women’s team went through undefeated but lost three sets to two in the final against Dragons.
