| Wise move by PNG, Aust govts | |
|
I WISH to thank the Koiari people,
the PNG Government and the Australian government for the decision to
stop mining on the famous Kokoda Trail. The decision came at an appropriate time as we observe Anzac Day. Sustainable development projects for the landowners and other issues over compensation are still being discussed between the two governments. Mining would have polluted the river systems and disrupted animal life and the environment. A good example of the damage that could be caused is like the the Bougainville copper mine at Panguna. The river was polluted and all its marine life disappeared. The hunting grounds have also been turned into a wasteland. The meat has been eaten and the landowner groups are now fighting over the bones. I am glad that the Kokoda Trail and the Koiari people will be spared of this. Gold and oil may be here today but they will be gone tomorrow whereas the Kokoda Trail will forever be here to remind our children and their children’s children of what happened during the Second World War. Instead, the trail will now become a World Heritage site for tourists all over the world to visit and enjoy. Mou Barea Port Moresby |
