| Teachers threaten to withdraw affiliation | |

MEMBERS of the Papua New Guinea
Teachers Association (PNGTA) in the Western Highlands have threatened to
withdraw their memberships following revelations of unauthorised pay
deductions recently. The 3,000-odd teachers told The National in Mt Hagen that the association did not get their approval to go ahead with the deductions. They said if this continues, they will withdraw from the PNGTA. Many said the association was only authorised to deduct K5 from their pay every fortnight, and nothing more. They want the PNGTA to immediately reimburse the extra deductions made in the last two fortnights. Headmaster of Kuga Parabu Primary School, Paul Paraka, in the Nebilyer district and Tep Moka from Koge Namba Primary School said on behalf of other teachers affected that they want immediate investigation into the illegal deduction by the Teachers Service Commission. Mr Paraka and Mr Moke, who had K180 and K69 deducted during the last two fortnights, said people involved must be prosecuted. President of the PNGTA branch in the province Aita Sanangkepe said on the last fortnight on April 23, he collected 200 pay slips from the teachers affected in the illegal deduction and sent them to Port Moresby but so far no action has taken and again same problem happened in the last pay day. He said that it’s an administrative matter and urged teachers to be patient. |
