CIC grants ENB spot-buying bid
By ELIZABETH VUVU
THE Coffee Industry Corporation (CIC) has given approval for cocoa farmers in East New Britain to engage in “on the spot buying”, something they could not do previously.

East New Britain Coffee Growers Cooperative Association general manager, Ignatius ToPupu said CIC gave its approval for the association to introduce “on the spot buying” of farmers’ coffee cherries following a submission from the association.
He said the coffee industry in East New Britain was still at its infancy and it was hoped that the new “on the spot buying” initiative would encourage new coffee plantings, develop and expand existing coffee blocks as well as increasing production and volume.
Mr ToPupu said in the past, the association was not paying coffee farmers on the spot for their cherries, but only recording the weight of their cherries, to be paid later.
This he said had resulted in a lot of farmers not bringing in their coffee for processing and milling.
The new initiative would encourage farmers to fully harvest their coffee and bring them to the central processing area.
He said the association was now ready to pay coffee farmers for their coffee cherries which they have been selling to the association for the last three months.
The total amount to be paid to the farmers is K15,257 which represents 3, 367kg cherries and coffee parchment from 353 registered coffee farmers.
Mr ToPupu said after the coffee farmers have been paid this month, the new “on the spot buying” of coffee cherries and parchment would be implemented.
