By JUNITA SOL SEVEN men stole cash and cheques worth K92,000 from the Dylup plantation outside Madang town on Friday. The men were armed with home-made guns and two factory-made pistols. Provincial police commander Chief Insp Anthony Wagambie Jnr told The National that police were treating the robbery as premeditated and organised. The suspects followed a Guard Dog Security vehicle, in another vehicle, up the North Coast road towards the plantation and then waited while the security guards delivered cash and cheques valuing up to K92 000 at the plantation. They then held up the plantation staff in the administration office and got away with everything a few minutes after the Guard Dog vehicle left. The suspects took off in the same vehicle they came in but left it at Banab and got on a PMV bus heading for town. They still remain at large. Police have taken the PMV driver and crew into custody, as well as the PMV truck and the vehicle used by the suspects. “Investigations into this matter are going well and we already know the identity of some suspects so our prospects in this matter looks promising,”Insp Wagambie said. He said they were confident they would make arrests soon. Meanwhile, police in Oro province reported they had made arrests in a case involving a fraudulent cheque last Tuesday. A 42-year-old local woman was caught attempting to cash a cheque worth K999 at the One Supermarket in Popondetta. Provincial police commander Chief Insp Micah Anaiwe said police were tipped off earlier and were keeping close watch on the suspect.. He said the woman told police that she was asked to cash the cheque for a young man who was also arrested after her report. Insp Anaiwe said the young man said he was asked to cash the cheque by another man. He said the suspect list was getting longer but police belived they would uncover the ring leaders soon. The two suspects remain in police custody. |
