Goroka thrash Raiders to lead in SP
Cup competition
By ZACHERY PER
BINTANGOR Lahanis became the new SP Cup rugby league competition
leader after defeating Wari Vele Raiders 40-22 in Goroka
yesterday.
Lahanis that won four games and had one draw is on nine points
while Raiders experiencing their first defeat is trailing second
on the points table with eight points.
Raiders coach Richard Wagambie blamed his side’s loss on many
dropped balls but had expected Lahanis to win because they have a
good combination of back liners and forwards.
Wagambie said the tries they scored were only through individual
efforts, adding that they would work on their weaknesses in
preparation to meet the Agmark Gurias in round six next week in
Port Moresby.
Former Kumul winger Garnet Auwo scored two tries in the opening
half with other tries were collected by Paulus Mondo and Stanley
Moliki. Half back Walter Hasu converted the kick to lead 22-6 at
the half time break.
In the opening minute of the second stanza, Lahanis centre Sam
Tobokina picked up a loose ball and raced 40 metres to score to
extend the lead 26-6.
Mondo busted through several Raiders defenders before setting up
centre George Abba to score, the try was unconverted that put the
host into clear waters 30-6.
Raiders strengthen defence to send centre Gimapau Keimelo to score
an unconverted try to trail 10-30.
Lahanis five-eighth Mack Siwi set up half-back Casey Frank to race
20 metres to score a converted try that extended the lead 36-10.
Lahanis onslaught was pursued with another centre try to
blockbusting forward Junior Ropra, Siwi once again put him
through, the conversion attempt by Auwo went begging to extend the
lead 40-10.
Raiders scored two consolation tries towards the dying minutes
through centre Keimelo (his second try) and hooker Dairi Iageti to
trail 22-40 at the fulltime siren.
Lahanis coach Peter Danga was quite satisfied with the win saying,
he commended his back lines and forward for playing their part to
win the game.
Danga said there were few mistakes he had identified and would be
working to correct this week before they meet Kunjin Eagles for
round six this weekend in Goroka.
