UPNG violence

A GROUP of students from the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) raided the Waigani campus security base and set one of the vehicles alight last Saturday.

The students also damaged three vehicles belonging to the university.
The attack on university security personnel resulted from the stabbing of an Engan student allegedly by a guard. Reports said the student was drunk and fought with the guard, who stabbed him in the hand. Other students and his friends retaliated and went on a rampage.
University regulations are strict on the consumption of alcohol, where intoxicated students are not allowed on campus.
Telephone lines and two-way radio equipment at the security base were also destroyed.
Broken glasses, up-turned furniture, stationeries and papers were strewn over the floor.
While this was going on, thieves took advantage of the situation and broke into the science and arts faculties and stole computers and equipment worth thousands of kina.
Reports said some of the stolen computers contained students’ assessment marks and gradings as well as research papers of post-graduate students.
Student leaders have appealed to the public for the safe return of the computers.
The university registrar and security supervisor refused to comment when contacted.
Police investigations are continuing.
