GOOD morning PNG and greetings to our many thousands of internet readers
from overseas. We hope you have an excellent day.
***
ONE of those overseas countries is the Solomon Islands. We send our
heartiest congratulations to the owners and management of the
Honiara-based Solomon Star. The innovative Solomon daily celebrated its
first 25 years in tandem with the Pacific Islands News Association
conference in Honiara.
***
EDITOR of the Star is the energetic and talented Robert Iroga who took up
his appointment at the beginning of this year. Robert was the first
Solomon Islander to graduate in Communication Arts, one of the key
courses available within the Faculty of Arts at Divine Word University in
Madang.
***
PAPUA New Guineans who have distinguished themselves while undertaking
the intensive four-year DWU course often refer to the strong emphasis it
places on the on-going development of a Pacific Island-based approach to
news reporting and the broader field of regional journalism. DWU tells us
that there are currently more than 70 students undertaking communication
arts and journalism.
***
SHOULD final approval for PNG citizenship be solely in the hands of the
Minister for Foreign Affairs or should it be the responsibility of either
the Foreign Affairs Secretary or an advisory panel of community leaders
whose decision could be final? What do you think?
***
WE’RE told that tourist numbers have risen: “PNG recorded 23,000
bona-fide tourists from the total of 77,730 international visitors last
year,” according to the Tourist Promotion Authority. That’s great news.
***
BUT it would be interesting to have a more detailed breakdown of those
tourists. How are the numbers determined? Are they based on the forms
filled-in by all travellers entering PNG, or on the numbers and classes
of visas issued? And are overseas visitors coming to see family members
counted as “tourists?”

ARGGGH! One more reference to “lamp flaps”… The disgusting lumps of
coagulated lard allegedly come from that harmless provider of lamb
cutlets, the sheep. Their offspring are “lamb”. The latter have no known
connection with the excellent Coleman pressure lamp.
