MORNING, one and all; we wish all our readers a safe and pleasant final day of May. Tomorrow, as that tuneful musical Carousel once proclaimed, June will be “bustin’ out all over”.
***
THE musical history of the second part of the 20th century, both on stage and in film, certainly owes much to the unforgettable music of Richard Rodgers and his lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II; its an inheritance that will once again come into its own in the years ahead.
***
THE duo put together a record that will almost certainly never be bettered. They earned 34 Tony awards, 15 Academy wins, two Pulitzer prizes and two Grammys. And the shows! Nobody who saw Carousel, South Pacific, Oklahoma, State Fair, Flower Drum Song, The King and I or The Sound of Music could ever forget the wonderful world of the two composers.
***
WELL now, that was a nice little wander down memory lane ... would someone pass us our ear trumpet and magnifying glass please? Ah, that’s better.
***
THREE cheers for Sir Mekere Morauta. The PNG leader has made a timely rejoinder to the Solomon Islands PM over the latter’s public support for the return of Sir Michael Somare to the PNG prime ministership after the elections. Sir Mek rightly took exception to Mr Sogavare’s remarks; they were indeed a piece of mindless interference in the affairs of this country.
***
IN essence, they were far worse than the many alleged “attacks on our sovereignty” harped upon by certain senior leaders in recent times; the remarks effectively insulted the distinguished and experienced group of PNG leaders who have chosen to contest the coming elections.
***
ON the other hand Mr Sogavare’s wish to see Sir Michael continue as PNG PM comes as no surprise; we’re sure it reflects the Solomon leader’s genuine hopes for the continuation of the obviously close partnership currently existing between the two leaders.
***
FINALLY, a word about election posters. They can’t be stuck up anywhere and everywhere; there are laws governing their use. Shopkeepers, regardless of their ethnicity, have every right to tear them down from their premises if they so choose. Candidates should display a tad more maturity.
