‘Night rallies breed AIDS’

MATHEW Siune, minister for Labour and Industrial Relations and Kundiawa-Gembogl MP, warned candidates and supporters against night rallies as they are likely to spur rapid spread of HIV/AIDS in Simbu province.
Mr Siune predicted that many people would contract HIV/AIDS after the election following sexual promiscuity induced by night campaigns in Simbu province.
“Campaigns at nights promote prostitution, which is likely to see more people contracting the disease … after the election, many men and women would find themselves infected,” Mr Siune said.
He called on candidates and their supporters to refrain from mobilising people especially at nights.
Mr Siune pointed these out during the official launching of PNG Party candidates in Kundiawa last Tuesday in the presence of his party leader and Moresby North West MP Sir Mekere Morauta.
He also called on supporters and candidates not to intimidate or suppress people’s rights to cast their votes freely.
Meanwhile, PNG Party Simbu regional candidate Fr John Garia said he decided to team up with Sir Mekere because of his policies to develop rural transport network, especially roads and bridges.
He urged the people to vote for candidates with qualities and credentials to bring about changes and who would effectively represent them in parliament.
“Do not waste your votes … if you vote for PNG Party candidates including myself, you will make a wise decision for the future of your children,” Fr Garia said.
He is one of the 19 candidates vying for the Simbu governor’s seat currently held by Peter Launa.
