Officers to take authorities to court

FRUSTRATED Correctional Service (CS) officers from the Buimo jail in Lae fronted up the Public Prosecutor’s office yesterday to take the Correctional Services Commission to court for unpaid allowances since 2005.
More than 20 male and female officers told The National they were fighting for their outstanding travelling allowances on National Court circuits to Bulolo and Finschhafen, escort duties when transferring prisoners to the Highlands provinces and to eliminate the technical delay and 50% deduction on their allowances.
“We are entitled K80 per day as our allowances under the Public Service Act but this is not eventuated,” they said.
“The CS is only paying us K40 and we get our allowances when we return from a trip or have to wait for another two weeks.”
They said they had raised the issue on many occasions with proper authorities but the response was poor.
They said they would hold the Northern region assistance commissioner, assistance commissioner Finance, assistance commissioner Operation and the commissioner as first to fourth defendants respectively in the court which is to be heard tomorrow at 9.30am.
