Show respect to your rivals, leaders urged

CANDIDATES have been urged to be responsible in their campaigns and to follow proper rules and guidelines set by the Electoral Commission.
Micheal Mori Wemin, a candidate contesting for the Moresby North East seat, yesterday said leaders needed to show respect for other candidates and to promote co-operation among people.
At the end of the day, it is up to the people’s choice and that the candidates have to respect that, he said.
Mr Wemin was reacting to a news report yesterday about a candidate’s vehicle being attacked by supporters of another candidate.
He said this was an unfortunate incident, but unless there is proof, it was unfair to allege that the people who attacked the vehicle were supporters of a rival candidate.
“I live at Makana and I can assure you that my supporters were not responsible for the attack as we were all out when the incident happened. Furthermore, the incident happened at the main road. It could have been anyone, and not necessarily supporters of a candidate, Mr Wemin said.
The candidate said that it was not right to condone violence caused by rival supporters and urged supporters of candidates to promote peace and their democratic rights to campaign and vote.
He further said that from his observations, campaigns were still being carried out even after 6pm.
“This is an improper behaviour of candidates who claim to be good leaders,” Mr Wemin said.
