Derari and Buafe bury hatchet to work better

By CLIFFORD FAIPARIK
ORO Provincial Administrator Monty Derari and the Oro police commander senior inspector Hugo Buafe yesterday reconciled in Popondetta, with the two men agreeing to forget their past differences.
The conflict regarding their respective jobs in running election operations had resulted in unruly behaviours among candidates and their supporters in recent weeks.
Speaking in front of police parade and the public, Messrs Derari and Buafe said they would forgive and forget their past differences.
“We will now work together to ensure peaceful election operations in the province,” Mr Derari said
Their differences had prompted the police southern command to dispatch a 16-member police team to help local police enforce law and order.
The team from Port Moresby led by superintendent Micah Anawe is now in Popondetta to help local police during the election period.
The team comprises 10 members from the Mobile Squad, two criminal investigation officers, one internal affairs officer and two communications officers.
They will be deployed for the two-month election period.
Mr Anawe will be taking over from Mr Buafe in running police operations during election period.
Mr Buafe will still be there but will look after other police matters.
Police are taking this step to bring normalcy and to give confidence among the public who will be
exercising constitutional duties without being harassed or intimidated.
