Appeal to bury 49 kids

By LUCY KAPI
FRIENDS Foundation is making a public appeal to assist the burial of 49 unclaimed children, mainly infants at the Port Moresby General Hospital mortuary.
Some of the children had been left there since January last year.
Friends Foundation manager Rory Sitapai said yesterday that the majority of these infants were aged less than four-years with only one aged seven.
He said the cause of their deaths varied from miscarriage to other health related problems.
He said most of the infants had not been claimed at all by their families, whilst some had had their parents going as far as getting warrants of burial for them but failing to claim the bodies for burial due mainly, to financial difficulties.
Mr Sitapai said because their bodies had remained in the mortuary for a long time, the hospital had approached his organisation to provide them with a decent burial.
“Friends Foundation is happy to assist as we have been burying unclaimed babies over the years, thanks to the support of generous organisations like Maybank and Nikas Finance,” Mr Sitapai said.
“So far, we have buried 126 babies,” he said, adding that the current 49 infants will be the highest number of babies to be buried at any one time.
However, Mr Sitapai said Friends Foundation needed to buy coffins and pay funeral and burial fees of these children and is making a public appeal for cash and kind to bury them.
Those who wish to help can call him on telephone 326 0775.
“As soon as we receive adequate funding, we will proceed with the burial of these children immediately,” he said.
