More men turning up for VCT: Data

MORE men are visiting sexually transmitted infections (STI) clinics in Goroka than women but many of the confirmed cases were women.
This was revealed in an annual data released by the St Joseph volunteer counselling and testing (VCT) centre in Goroka, Eastern Highlands province, during the International Day of Action for Women’s Health.
Helen Dabaraota, a nurse at the centre presented a chart on the
number of people who visited.
She pointed out that since April last year, about 600 people visited the centre of which 56% of them were males (336) and 44% females (264).
She said that out of the 600 people, who visited the VCT centre, about 50 of them were found to be HIV positive.
She said many women were not coming to the check their HIV/AIDS status because they were scared of
society scorn or ridicule or didn’t know the centre existed.
In another chart, she explained to the women, who gathered around her presentation, that the number of people who were HIV positive was increasing.
She said out of all the positives cases, most of them were women.
She added that it was just a year’s report but if they put together all the data they’ve collected so far, the HIV positive figures would ascend rapidly.
