Beon to build new facilities

By CHRIS TABEL
THE Beon Correctional Service in Madang province is undergoing new infrastructural developments to cater for possible increase in detainees this year.
These include the building of two compounds for female detainees and a separate compound for both high and low risk male prisoners.
The two buildings, which would cost K6 million to build, were funded by AusAID’s Law and Justice Sector Improvement programme.
Jail commanding officer Supt Joe Jako said on Monday the buildings were timely as it would cater for possible increases in detainees in the lead-up to the election period and opening of the Ramu nickel and Yandera mines, which could see an increase in law and order problems.
“Madang town will become a mining township soon and with the elections this year, we would most likely see an increase in law and order problems,” Supt Jako said.
Four female detainees are temporarily living in a converted L-40 staff house, waiting for their new compound to be completed with construction of the male dormitories soon to follow.
Male and juvenile convicts are currently housed in the AusAID funded complex set up in 1995.
The newly constructed buildings, each with a capacity to hold up to 300 inmates, will consist of four dormitories, a recreational hall, dining hall and ablution facilities.
Supt Jako said the buildings would also be used to house transferred prisoners from other provincial correctional institutes such as Bihute, Baisu and Boram.
The project began last November and is expected to be completed by December.
