WHP poll works stalled

THE preparations of the National Election in Western Highlands province have been stalled after the election manager and his officials where locked out of their offices.
The closure of the Kapal Haus and the provincial headquarters building has prevented public servants from getting into their offices since Monday morning.
Two factions within the Jika tribe clashed over the provincial administrator’s post last Friday night and Saturday morning. The incident took place in Mt Hagen.
The office of the Electoral Commission at the Kapal Haus has been closed since Monday morning.
Likewise, the office of the Hagen open seat located next to the provincial headquarters has also been shut.
Election manager Kala Rawali said the closure of the Kapal Haus affected election preparations for the province.
He said he did not know when the provincial headquarters building would be opened, adding that his office was still closed, preventing his officers from working.
Metropolitan commander Chief Inspector Ambane Kaiglo said the general situation in the city was very
quiet after the weekend’s violence.
Mr Kaiglo said police operations were still ongoing and they were now monitoring the situation very closely.
He said the election operations would be carried out day and night, adding that if anybody tries to cause disturbance in the city or destroy Government property, they would be arrested and charged.
He said as part of election operations, his policemen and women were carrying out beat patrol and setting up roadblocks along the main highway.
Meanwhile, a public servant with the office of the home and affairs division at Kapal Haus said she did not know when they could return to work.
She said there had been no notice from the office of the provincial administrator advising public servants to return to work.
However, she said this did not affect other public servants working in the districts.
“I believed we might start work next month,” she said.
