Sepik Ironman date all set for June 10

By JOYCE HUANJO DWU Journalism student
Teams all set for Sepik Ironman Competition.
Teams from all over East Sepik province and others sponsored by big companies would be competing for the next Sepik iron man on June 10.
According to the co-coordinator of the competition Stephan Damien, the number of teams competing for this year would be less because of coinciding events.
"The athletes are getting ready for the Pacific Games while others too busy with the upcoming elections," he said.
He said only 50 teams would participate in this year's competition which was reduced down from the 84 teams who participated last year.
He said all the teams were expected to register before June 2. The registration fee for each team is K350.
Damien said the event was a four partner's competition open to any men, women and children each with two runners, a swimmer and a cyclist.
The teams can be made up of mixed men and women, all men, all women and even families.
Damien said that some of the major participating teams are Tang Mow, Brandi Secondary School and Porgera Joint Venture.
The rural areas have also been given a chance with special prizes that would be presented on that day.
Damien said that any village team who finished first among the winning teams would be presented with a 30 horsepower outboard motor and a 19-foot dingy.
Angoram MP Arthur Somare will give the Angoram winning team a 23-foot dingy and a 40 horsepower outboard motor.
The first prize is 10,000, second prize K7,500 and third K5,000. The event will start at 9am and is expect to finish about 11am.
Damien said the money they raise from the event are often donated to schools to buy computers, and to hospitals to use. "We donated about K40,000 to the Boram General Hospital last year," he said.
