Perfecting his art

By STEPHANIE TOMORINA UPNG Journalism student
Patience and self-control are perhaps best portrayed in the field of art.
Many famous artists would agree to this simple but meaningful statement made by Daru Mako, a third year art and design student at the University of PNG.
Daru Mako, 20 from Kamate village in Lufa, Eastern Highlands province was born in Port Moresby.
According to Daru, patience and self-control is an inbuilt character in all artists. Artists have to possess these characteristics because painting and other forms of art take a lot of time to develop and perfect.
Daru is a talented young man with a vision to accomplish in life.
He wants to acquire all necessary skills and knowledge in arts and design and be financially secure before going out into the field.
Daru does not confine himself to his school work, he also creates employment for himself.
His biggest breakthrough was when he earned K300, his first income, for his art work which motivated him to run an art business.
He established 'Fave Arts' in 2005 as a business name and is in the process of registering his business with the Investment Promotion Authority.
'Fave' is his nickname his mother gave him when he was in primary school.
Daru was also involved in the paintings of the war murals at Murray Barracks, Port Moresby in 2005
Last year, he designed the Student Leadership Training certificate for the Student Services Department of the University of PNG and is currently working on three portraits of UPNG staff.
Daru is financially supported by his parents; Mako Aso, a chef working with the Highlander hotel in Mt. Hagen, Kunu Mako, who is self-employed, his two elder sisters and an aunt.
But Daru says he does not totally depend on them. He uses his skills and talent to produce something to earn an income and gain recognition.
Daru's role model and art tutor Philemon Yalamu who is a digital/electronic and interactive multimedia artist says Daru is not someone who waits to be spoon-fed.
Mr Yalamu described Daru as a committed, humble and positive minded person.
He has done and gained a lot in art related area and has the potential to achieve more and create employment for himself in the future.
Living up to his motto, 'Portray Professionalism in all aspects of life' Daru spends
most of his free time doing computer graphics.
With the changing technology, he is able to handle electronic, digital and interactive multimedia substances (equipment / materials).
Daru believes he is very good in all aspects of art: that is fine arts, textile designing, computer graphics, and print making.
He is specialized in doing general paintings such as wall paintings, murals, photo portraits, notice & billboards, banners, and graphics / publications such as designing commercial posters, pamphlets, letterheads logo, business cards, photo editing, cartooning and illustrations.
Asked if he considers himself lucky, he answers, "Absolutely."
Firstly because of his natural artistic talent and secondly the opportunity to study art and design at UPNG to maximize his talent and potential.
Daru encouraged grade 12 visual arts students around the country to take up Art & Design at the University of Papua New Guinea.
He says, 'You will not regret making this decision later in life'.
