Kicking up a stink over uncollected
garbage
I AM a resident at Hohola No. 3. Our
garbage has not been collected for the past three weeks.
I contacted the NCDC Waste Management on May 31 and again
yesterday afternoon (June 5).
I spoke to a lady officer and was told that NCDC has not paid
the contractors, therefore the garbage has not been collected.
Thank you for that information as we are now aware of the
reason.
My question now to NCDC is, we are paying a lot of taxes and
where has the money gone?
Some of the contractors are being paid by candidates so they are
not worried about the garbage that is left on the roadside.
I will dispose of my garbage at a proper place after finding
transport and paying fuel for disposing my garbage.
But how about the others who will not use their common sense.
I will not be surprise to see garbage along the freeway or even
in front of the City Hall.

Moti strains relations
A SENATE committee has heard that
Papua New Guinea has still not agreed to a plan the Australian
government announced two years ago to send 10 Australian police
advisers. Foreign affairs department official David Ritchie said
Australia cannot send the police advisers over until the PNG
Government formally agreed to the plan. It is my view that the
Julian Moti case and the perceived paternalism by Australia in
PNG and the Pacific region may have been the contributing
factor. Moreover, the suspension of ministerial talks between
PNG and Australia added more fuel to the already deteriorating
diplomatic relations. In the meantime, Australia cannot expect
the PNG Government to make any positive decisions until
relations improve at political level as both governments appear
to be extremely stubborn in their stance over the Moti issue. — Maranganulik E, Boroko
Pat on back for Shorncliffe
I WOULD like to say thank you to our
very own road construction company, Shorncliffe Ltd. Our
Morobean leaders like Luther Wenge and Manasupe Zurenuoc should
not be critising each other but hang their heads in shame, when
a company like Shorncliffe and its staff voluntarily repaired
our roads, particularly the Independence Drive on the morning of
June 3. — A’aro Gwamo Siin, Lae
Vele misses the mark
GOVERNOR Wari Vele’s response to
remarks by Janet Sape on his recent overseas trips is off the
mark. Get to the point and answer to the issues at hand. Any
undertakings by a public office holder should be scrutinised for
the purpose of good governance and transparency. All we want are
honest and transparent leaders, who have vision to get this
country forward. The issue was not about buying Second Time
Around or who is richer and wealthier. — Henry Nimu, Waigani
Practise good marriage
HEADLINES like “Man guilty of
manslaughter” are so painful. Due to our culture and PNG way of
solving conflicts, domestic violence is not treated as a major
crime. It may be portrayed as a crime during International
Women’s Day. Sometimes we ladies try to protect our men; other
times the family intervenes to bring the situation under
control; and other times, law-enforcers treat it as something
small and could be solved in one’s home. Only when we lose
someone do we take action. Fellow Papua New Guineans, when will
we save our children from losing a parent or sometimes, both
parents due to domestic violence? Marriage is about love,
respect, trust and to all the single people out there, please
think thoroughly before you tie the knot. — Marty Linda, Via

Discourtesy uncalled for
I AGREE with Imbo-re regarding the In
Moresby Tonite programme (The National, May 29). It is a total
waste of time. The other comment I would like to make is that
the presenter showed neither courtesy nor respect to Ryan Pini,
who was born in PNG and is a naturalised citizen, by asking a
stupid question: “I quote as an Australian, are you going to
take that gold to Australia or is it for PNG?” This is
absolutely nonsense. It is important to ensure questions are
posed in a manner not to embarrass those being interviewed. Pini
was not happy when the question was asked as I could see from
his reaction and this showed poor presentation. EMTV should get
people who are more professional. — Kasus, Lae
Not the same promise again
I REFER to the Prime Minister’s
campaign in Minj (The National, June 4). The ruling NA
Government has failed the people of Jiwaka and Hela by not
delivering its promise for a separate province before this
year’s elections. Yet the PM is making the same promise again.
Is this another election gimmick? — Stanley Nondol, Port Moresby
Positives for Goroka
IT IS intriguing to see people of all
classes vying for the Goroka Open seat. As a Goroka resident, I
am pleased to see some changes such as water projects, power
supply, improvement in sewage and health care, bridges built and
funds made available to assist the small people. On the other
hand, the main market and Kakaruk market remained an eyesore,
while the law and order problem continued to escalate. In my
opinion, I have seen more positives than negatives in the last
five years. — Yukulon Mainiken, Goroka
