Illiterate adults trained on LPV

By HARLYNE JOKU
LITERACY students were taught how to vote under the LPV system yesterday at the Port Moresby YWCA centre.
They were also given voter’s education and were warned not to go for candidates that give them “sugar and lollies”.
Anne Kerepia, a member of the YWCA board who took part in the election awareness drive for the illiterate, said the voter must know and understand his or her candidate before voting for them.
She said she was pleased that her more than 60 students made up of unschooled mothers and youths were now able to read and write 1, 2 and 3.
Most of the students were from settlements around Port Moresby.
Ms Kerepia said being an illiterate adult is like a person groping in the dark.
She said once they begin to read and write, that is the time when they would feel they are beginning to see the light.
Alex Augopa, from Morata 2, thanked YWCA and its trainers for giving them the opportunity to learn about the elections and the LPV system.
He appealed to the other students to vote for the right leaders who would bring them the basic services.
