TI PNG in support of new police watchdog

WATCHDOG Transparency International PNG (TI PNG) has expressed its support for the agreement between Ombudsman Commission and Police Force for the Police Complaints Ombudsman.
“It is important for the people of PNG to have faith in an institution such as the Royal PNG Constabulary. Over the years, there have been numerous reports of abuse of power, assaults or even unlawful shootings allegedly committed by members of the police, where the complaints have never been properly investigated,” TI PNG said in a statement yesterday.
“The fact that the investigations conducted by (police) internal affairs officers will now be overseen by the Police Ombudsman and should make people more confident they will not be ignored. Transparency and honesty are an important part of any Government body and the RPNGC is no exception to this.”
According to TI PNG, the RPNGC has a wonderful and proud history interwoven with the development of this country.
