OC concerned over release of K90m

THE Ombudsman Commission yesterday expressed serious concern over the Government’s release of more than K90 million in development grants to the sitting Members of Parliament on the eve of elections.
“A whopping K90 million has now been released since March 15,” Ombudsman John Nero said.
This total is out of the K200 million allocation of the Government’s developmental grants for development projects in provinces.
“I want to be frank about this. A whopping K90 million was disbursed .... I do not know whether proper acquittals were made at the time of advancement,” Mr Nero told reporters yesterday.
He said his office was currently investigating on this disbursement.
Mr Nero and Chief Ombudsman Ila Geno were concerned that if certain MPs did not return after the coming elections, it would be a lot of hard work to retrieve the unaccounted funds.
The Ombudsman yesterday expressed their concerns in light of their earlier call (issued last Nov 27 and again in early March this year) on the leaders of this country and the various Government offices and agencies to follow the Public Finance (Management) Act, which clearly calls for full acquittals of funds before further grants are released.
