PNG looks to China for economic tips

By STEPHANIE WAIDE
PAPUA New Guinea will look forward to learning more from China’s macro economy and to establish more economic ties between the two countries.
Former politician and now ambassador to China, John Momis, yesterday signed his contract with the State to represent Papua New Guinea in China.
“Papua New Guinea has done well economically, and China offers vast experience in rapid economic growth, which PNG could benefit from,” Mr Momis said.
“Our aim is to empower the people and make sure that PNG is recognised as an important part of the global village,” he added.
With China’s continued economic interest in PNG, the ambassador was optimistic about enhancing existing ties with China.
“We have to look at strategies to improve our stand economically as PNG had been marginalised,” he said.
The signing, officiated by Governor-General Sir Paulias Matane yesterday, also saw the High Commissioner to Solomon Islands Parei Temei appointed to another term in office.
The occasion, witnessed by family and senior public servants, was held at the Government House in Konedobu.
The State also recognised Rendle Rimua as Secretary for Department of Petroleum and Energy, Pepi Kimas as Secretary for Lands and Physical Planning and Anton Benjamin as the Department of Agriculture and Livestock’s Secretary for the next four years.
