Teacher bashed, school closes down in protest

By ELIZABETH VUVU
THE Malaguna Primary School in Rabaul, East New Britain, suspended classes yesterday as a mark of protest against violence against its teaching staff.
On Monday, a male teacher at the school was assaulted in front of his class by relatives of a Grade 7 student.
A senior teacher at the school, who wished not to be named, said the school board decided to suspend classes for the day yesterday to show parents and the surrounding community that they did not condone acts of violence perpetrated against members of their teaching staff.
“If they have any grievances about the performance of teachers or their own children, they should take it up with the appropriate authorities at the school,” she said.
According to the teacher, there was a confrontation between the male teacher and a student on Monday morning with the student leaving in tears.
The student had allegedly gone home crying to his parents and relatives, who mobilised and came to the school.
The senior teacher said while the teacher was writing on the blackboard, one of the student’s relative walked in and bashed him up in front of the class.
The school board called an urgent meeting on Monday and yesterday called in the parents of the student to talk to them.
The matter has been reported to police.
Classes will resume today.
