Sit-out protest looming at UoG

By ZACHERY PER
THE Non-Academic Staff Association of the University of Goroka will conduct a meeting today to vote on a sit-out in the second semester.
Members claimed they would stop work for the second semester and demand the re-instatement of the full council of the university, which had been suspended since September 2005.
The non-teaching staff believed only the duly elected/appointed council under suspension could restore the UoG Act and statutes and bring back proper financial control, academic management and ensure smooth progress of the infrastructure projects worth millions of kina.
Acting president of NASA Raphael Witne said the possible sit-out of the second semester was the result of a failure by the caretaker administration of three senior lecturers, who took office during the peak of the 2006 crisis, to assist in reinstating the university council.
He said NASA reactivated their log of claims registered with the industrial registrar in May this year after the caretaker administration allegedly started violating the UoG Act and abused procedures and circumvented due process to suit their own interest in holding office for a prolonged period of eight months.
Acting Vice-Chancellor Dr Michael Mel, who is currently on a two-week visit in Australia, could not be reached for comments yesterday.
