Kapris urges rivals to abide by laws

PEOPLE’S Action Party (PAP) leader Gabriel Kapris has urged candidates vying to unseat him for the Maprik Open seat to abide by election laws.
Mr Kapris was responding to a media statement in The National last Friday that reported 10 candidates for the Maprik Open seat petitioning the East Sepik provincial election manager Sale Bunat over appointments of various polling officials whom the petitioners claimed were supporters of Mr Kapris.
According to the report, the petitioners also claimed that these polling officials were also involved in foul play, cheating and disputing with Sir Pita Lus in the 2002 elections.
“The polling officials are public servants serving the Government of the day. Nobody is taking sides. And these candidates who are complaining are the very ones who we united with during the 2002 elections to oust Sir Pita. Now they are siding up with Sir Pita against me,” Mr Kapris said in a statement.
Mr Kapris maintained that the meeting which the petitioners held was illegal and he should have been called in to attend the meeting to gauge the views of all concerned parties.
Mr Kapris said he spoke with Electoral Commissioner Andrew Trawen last Friday, who said such complaints raised by the petitioners were not new and he would not entertain such behaviour.
Mr Kapris is leading 60 candidates into the elections under the PAP banner.
